Transferring to Barking and Dagenham Fostering

You can transfer from a Fostering Agency or another Local Authority

A foster carer can choose to transfer to a different fostering service for a number of reasons.

THIS MAY BE BECAUSE…

Location

Sometimes foster carers move to a new area. It’s always easier to take care of a child who is based closer to the area the carer lives.

Training

They feel the training they are receiving from their current service doesn't make them feel valued and supported.

Support

The carer will benefit more from a local authority’s support offer, including in-house therapeutic direction.

Foster with Us

At Barking and Dagenham we welcome experienced foster carers to apply to foster with our service.

You may wish to become a remand carer, a Mockingbird Hub Home Carer, you may wish to foster Parents & Children, or maybe wish to just foster for your local authority.

Whatever your motivation, we will listen to your reason to transfer, and support you to the best of our ability, making the transition to our local authority a smooth and supported one.

Transferring to a new fostering service

Moving services is a big decision and shouldn’t be undertaken lightly, especially if there are children in placement with the foster carer.

Foster carers should investigate any new fostering service carefully, and they should also be aware that moving to another fostering service usually requires a repeat of their approval and assessment process which can take several months.

Guiding principles

Freedom of movement

All foster carers have the right to freedom of movement between fostering services.

Service based on your needs

Fostering services should not persuade foster carers to transfer to a new service in order to ensure the continuation of a child’s placement with them.

The voice of children and young people matter

Planning for a movement from one service to another must be child-centred and allow for the child or young person to have their views heard.

No overlapping approvals

A foster carer cannot be approved by more than one fostering service at the same time, and so they must not be approved by the fostering service to which they are transferring before the date that their previous approval ends.

Transfer protocols

Wherever a carer lives in the UK, the way in which fostering services should manage the movement of foster carers is guided by a transfer protocol.

Please know, should you decide to transfer to us, we will support you throughout the process.
